This new academic year has been a time of change for ecoACTIVE, as, after 5 years of dedicated work, we bid a fond farewell to Kath Hayward, one of our Senior Education Officers. We thank her for all her hard work over the years, and wish her well with her new exciting plans. We also extend a warm welcome to a new member of our team, Sarah Vant, who has recently started working with us as a part-time Education Officer. Welcome to ecoACTIVE, Sarah!
Our new Waste Reduction project, funded by the North London Waste Authority, has started! ecoACTIVE will work with 7 primary schools accross 7 North London boroughs, demonstrating the benefits of waste reduction in schools and teaching the importance of the ‘waste hierarchy’. This project follows on from the success of the World of Difference pilot programme which was delivered in the Summer term. For more information on this project, and to read updates from the schools, please visit our new waste reduction webpage.
You are warmly invited to ecoACTIVE’s Annual General Meeting which is taking place at Hackney City Farm on Monday 8th October. Refreshments and chat from 4.30pm, meeting from 5-6pm. ecoACTIVE has developed a range of new products and activities over the last year. Come along to find out more, as well as our future plans. We look forward to seeing you there!
Schools accross London are starting to return for the new academic year this week, and ecoACTIVE staff are busy with exciting programme preparations for this new Autumn term. ecoACTIVE provide free workshops for Hackney schools, but also work with schools all accross London at a cost of £170 halfday, £340 fullday, so contact us to discuss. London is currently hosting the 2012 Paralympic Games, and as a result some pupils in Olympic boroughs, such as Hackney, are not due back to school until next week. So enjoy the final week of The Games, and ecoACTIVE will look forward to visiting your school soon!
With the school term over, ecoACTIVE are now providing workshops for holiday playschemes and events, as well as planning for our new Autumn term programmes. Thanks to all our session workers and volunteers for their invaluable work over the busy Summer term. Whether it was running a stall at a Summer fete, assisting with our many classroom sessions, or working with groups outdoors in this wet Summer weather, we couldn’t have done it without you! If you would like to be kept informed of ecoACTIVE’s current work, please subscribe to our mailing list.
The London 2012 Olympic Games are due to start next week, and school pupils in the London Borough of Hackney have been gripped with Olympic-fever! ecoACTIVE have been running popular Olympic-themed litter & waste workshops for schools and community groups over the last few weeks. With the Olympic & Paralympic Games just around the corner, this is your last chance to book one of our fun Olympic sessions over the summer. Find out what Hackney Council is doing to keep our streets tidy during the games, design a waste-free lunch for an athlete, and make your own recycled medal! FREE to all within LB Hackney. Cost to those outside the borough are £170 for a halfday and £340 for a fullday.
ecoACTIVE recognises the many benefits that outdoor learning can have, and supports Empty Classroom Day, the new initiative to get pupils learning out of the classroom on 6th July. Over 100 UK schools have signed up to take part. For hackney schools, we still have FREE outdoor learning sessions available, which can take place in your local park, greenspaces or school grounds. ecoACTIVE can also provide outdoor sessions to schools and groups outside the borough at a cost. Don’t forget, ecoACTIVE are also available to run a stall and engaging activities at your school fete or fair this summer. Do contact us to discuss your requirements.
If you value the work that ecoACTIVE carries out in schools and communities in North London, please do consider making a donation to our charity. Donating is easy, simply text ‘ECOA01 £10′ to 77070. To change your donation change the ‘£10′ to your preferred amount.
Please see ‘get involved’ for more info on how you can support ecoACTIVE.
Our new Education Assistant, Maripaz de San Miguel Brinquis, has begun her Vodafone World of Difference project on waste reduction in two Hackney primary schools. The two schools are already doing lots of recycling, so she is helping them look at ways to reduce and reuse more of their waste. The project has gotten off to a great start, and the enthusiastic pupils are now hard at work on publicising their campaigns to the whole school.
ecoACTIVE is pleased to welcome our new Education Officer, Gemma Hindi, who starts with us today. Gemma will be working three days a week, running sustainability workshops in schools and helping keep our lovely new website up to date! Gemma has a background working in Forest Schools, bush craft and environmental education.
We’re looking forward to Gemma joining our team.
