Cool the Planet

It’s not just children who can learn practical ways of saving the planet with ecoACTIVE: a 10-week course for adults called ‘Cool the Planet’ proved how effective it can be to involve the whole family in sustainable living and learning.

We wanted to do something about tackling fuel poverty, while improving people’s understanding of how (and why) to live a more energy-efficient life.  So we ran a series of classes, in schools and at Children’s Centres, which involved games, reading and writing activities, group discussions and a range of fun activities aimed at improving participants’ ability to manage costs and calculate their energy use.

“It is an important project to help teach children, help the planet, save the next generation – and politicians need to learn.”

Targeted at those wanting to improve their literacy and numeracy, the course was attended in large part by people with English as their second or third language and incorporated practical activities – including making some very useful draught-excluders – alongside language support, introducing family members to vocabulary around energy use, bill payment and waste reduction.

“I like this course, I enjoy it, I understand water and energy, I taught my children too.  It’s not just about money, how can I save for now, but for the future, for our children.”

We’re almost halfway through these sessions now, and have successfully created a number of family action plans and run several inter-generational sessions, which get the whole family working together to save energy and water, reduce carbon emissions and recycle more.  We also helped some participants move on to further language classes, improving their English and their ability to take control of their household energy and waste.
