Sanctuary Housing Love Parks Week in Hackney
Green spaces in Hackney’s Morningside area are about to be transformed for the community in support of national campaign Love Parks Week.
Thanks to a project launched by St Luke’s Church and the team work of Sanctuary Housing and local environmental education charity ecoACTIVE, two areas in Woodbine Terrace will be turned into a blooming wildlife and tasty kitchen garden, for residents to learn from, relax in and enjoy.
Sanctuary Housing’s ButfieldHouseGarden and the church garden, named ‘St Luke’s SecretGarden’ by residents, will be undergoing the transformation which is planned to be completed in March 2015. The local community is invited to a fun day where the gardens will be launched on Saturday 23 August from 2 to 5pm.
The project has been funded by Sanctuary Housing, the Hackney Fashion Hub, The Mayor of London’s Pocket Park Programme and People’s Postcode Trust, a charity funded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. ecoACTIVE will educate and provide support to the whole community to ensure the gardens are designed and created by the residents themselves.
Jo Revett, neighbourhood partnerships manager for Sanctuary Housing, said: “Love Parks Week has a very strong message of ensuring communities have access to an area of green space, to learn from, enjoy and relax in.
“We are very pleased that we are able to work with ecoACTIVE and the local church on this project and hope that lots of residents will get involved to make this space something they can feel proud of.”
Over 1,200 Sanctuary Housing residents live in Morningside and the majority do not have their own gardens. These green spaces will provide an area that residents can call their own and will also extend for the use of MorningsidePrimary School and Children’s Centre.
Rev. Betsy Blatchley, vicar of St Luke’s, said: “We are thrilled to be able to work with local partners to transform St Luke’s Garden and surrounding spaces into places of recreation, learning and oasis for the local community.
“We are grateful to Sanctuary Housing, ecoACTIVE, the Hackney Fashion Hub and our architects EAST – along with our funders – for making this possible.”
Sarah Duffy, from ecoACTIVE, added: “Local residents have already played a huge role in getting the wildlife garden started, it’s looking great! We are really appreciative of the community support and look forward to working with even more residents as the gardens come to life.”
Love Parks Week, which runs from 25 July to 5 August, has the simple aim of encouraging people to visit, enjoy and take pride in their local green spaces; essential for happy and healthy communities. The leading housing provider is supporting this initiative by aiming to maintain green spaces in the area and encouraging residents to enjoy them.
