Green schools

Blue Planet and Greta Thunberg have been pivotal in making today’s youth only too aware of environmental concerns.  However, young people often believe they don’t have the same freedom to influence change.

Green schools provide a safe, democratic environment for children of all ages to experience active citizenship.  This has a positive impact on pupil’s self-confidence and well-being, as well as benefiting the wider community.  Children can both lead and be part of the change.

Benefits to schools of being green

Being green brings a whole range of benefits to schools.  There is something for everyone – projects are child-led, and topics might include energy, healthy living, transport, waste and water.  Success is measured by results. Children learn how to monitor, evaluate and report on projects, and develop an understanding that things are not black and white, there is not necessarily a right and a wrong; they discover the power of change and teamwork.

Soft Skills, Teamwork

Green schools provide wider learning opportunities, and a chance to develop softer skills. Projects rely on teamwork and co-operation, requiring practical and academic skills.  Children become more sensitive to other peoples’ needs.

Cost Savings

Eco-schools increase environmental awareness, which results in financial savings for schools.  Projects based on food waste, not only raise awareness but also drive change.  Friends of the Earth report that up to a third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted.  According to WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme), cutting out avoidable food waste is equivalent to a 22 pence reduction per cost of a school meal.  Imagine how this saving would translate into the home!

Community Cohesion

Green Schools strengthen the relationship between the school and the local community.  Community-based projects set a common vision and a sense of belonging.  Creating a green space for the local neighbourhood has been shown to reduce isolation and loneliness and has a positive impact on integrating minority groups.

Green programs for schools

Taking the first step can sometimes be daunting, but the rewards are most definitely worthwhile.  EcoActive is proud to be associated with several schemes and can provide support and advice to schools looking to implement or maintain their eco-projects.

Green Influencers

EcoActive is thrilled to be a host organisation for the Green Influencers Scheme run by the Ernest Cook Trust.  The scheme aims to make environmental social action a regular habitual part of young people’s lives, benefitting both our communities and the environment.  All too often children miss out on the benefits of social action.
