The Story of ecoACTIVE began as a unique, locally driven initiative aimed at getting Londoners more engaged in sustainability through interactive workshops and learning activities.
We embrace the concept of “Think Global; Act Local”, by helping school and community groups to understand critical global issues and the small actions they can take to make a difference.
EcoACTIVE started with Prue Poulton and the Hackney Environmental Education Project (HEEP), which ran from 1984-94. Prue developed the unique combination of urban studies, environmental education and active learning which is still at the heart of the ecoACTIVE approach. The Rubbish Dump was a recycling education centre in Hackney where Prue went on to work in 1995, before becoming a Hackney Environmentalist-in-Residence, working within schools to support their sustainability learning. The Rubbish Dump was proud to re-launch as ecoACTIVE in 1999.
Since becoming a registered charity in 2008, ecoACTIVE has broadened our remit and also extended the reach of our work. From a story that started out delivering only recycling education, we now offer a wide range of topics for our workshops, including air quality, forest school, community gardening, wildlife and biodiversity, waste prevention, composting, and local environment. We are also in the process of developing a new suite of sessions for the coming months.
The ecoACTIVE team is made up of people who are passionate about both the environment and the power of education. They make environmental issues come to life, with easy-to-understand explanations and exciting exercises. Many of our session workers and volunteers are previous teachers and our workshops are created to align with the National Curriculum, so you can be sure that working with ecoACTIVE is well worth it.
Our immersive activities, which we bring directly to your classroom, community centre or outdoor space, can be life-changing for those who participate.
One-off workshops or long-term projects
In addition to one-off workshops, we also support long-term sustainability projects over the course of weeks and months, such as setting up community gardens, regenerating disused green spaces and helping schools to transform how they operate to be more sustainable.
We can provide a single or series of sessions tailored to your needs, focusing on anything from waste prevention and recycling, air quality, or setting up a community garden to forest school, or helping to green-up your neighbourhood. We will work with you to figure out what kind of workshop will work best and then find a time for ecoACTIVE to come to your school or centre. It is best to get in touch with us as early as possible to ensure that we are available.
So if you want to create a community garden, develop a waste prevention project, sort out your recycling or simply raise people’s awareness of sustainable development and what it might mean for them, get in touch and we’ll support you, to support your community.
FREE workshops for Hackney Schools and Community Groups
And if you’re a Hackney school, take a look at our programme of free activities available to primaries and secondaries across the borough – funded by the London Borough of Hackney to help schools manage their waste more effectively, and learn more about their local environment.
