Our Story

ecoACTIVE began as a unique, locally driven initiative aimed at getting Londoners more engaged in sustainability through interactive workshops and learning activities.

Our origins

ecoACTIVE started with Prue Poulton and the Hackney Environmental Education Project (HEEP), which ran from 1984-94.  Prue developed the unique combination of urban studies, environmental education and active learning which is still at the heart of the ecoACTIVE approach. The Rubbish Dump was a recycling education centre in Hackney where Prue went on to work in 1995, before becoming a Hackney Environmentalist-in-Residence, working within schools to support their sustainability learning. The Rubbish Dump was proud to re-launch as ecoACTIVE in 1999..

Why ecoACTIVE?

Since becoming a charity in 2008, we have broadened our remit. We now offer sessions with a wide range of themes, including forest school, community gardening, wildlife and nature connection, waste prevention, and climate change.

The ecoACTIVE team is passionate about both the environment and the power of education. They make environmental issues come to life, with engaging, hands-on activities. Many of our session workers and volunteers are previous teachers and our workshops are created to align with the National Curriculum, so you can be sure that working with ecoACTIVE is well worth it.

Our immersive activities, which we bring directly to your classroom, community centre or outdoor space, can be life-changing for those who participate.
